In a Bind

So a month or so back I was asked to come up with a little devotion for a meeting I was in. This morning I was going through my note book and came across the little devotion. Anyways I just felt compelled to share it, just a good reminder for me and I think probably for you too. Acts 20:22-24 is some of my favorite scripture, and it reads…”And now, behold, bound by the Spirit, I am on my way to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there, except that the Holy Spirit solemnly testifies to me in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions await me.But I do not consider my life of any account as dear to myself, so that I may finish my course and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify solemnly of the gospel of the grace of God.” Ok so just so we understand what’s going on here in this text, let me explain. First of all, this is Paul talking and as u read in the scripture, Holy Spirit has assured him that bond and affliction awaits him. Wow, sound like fun to me! But where I would prolly wanna run the opposite direction, Paul says look it doesn’t matter what comes against me because I am bound by the Spirit and my life isn’t that dear to myself compared to what God has called me to do! See what really jumped out to me in this scripture was the word bound. Bound here in the Greek is the word deo, and it’s meaning is explained, put under obligation, constrained, compelled by conviction. See when we are bound by the Spirit we can only do what the Spirit does. Think of a chain, if you are bound by a chain, you can only do what the chain allows you to do. See I think as Christians we often tell God that we will do/go whatever/wherever he wants as long as … fill in the blank, but that’s not being bound by the Spirit! When we are bound by the Spirit we don’t care what may come against us, we only care about the task he’s put before us because we realize it’s not about us it’s about Him and His work! Gal 2:20 says “it’s not I that live but Christ that lives in me” Rom 12 says ” present yourself as a living sacrifice” Luke 9:23 says “deny yourself, take up your cross daily” Ya see it’s not about us, it’s about He who lives in me and in YOU! We have to be bound by the Spirit so that we can finish the work he’s given us, doesn’t matter how scary that may look at times because it’s His life anyways!
