Circumstantial Goodness

The goodness of God, we sing about it, read about it, talk about it, but do we fully grasp and believe it for ourselves? I believe God is good; I believe he has a good plan for my life and that he does good in the lives of others, as long as, fill in the blank. So often I let the trials of life and my circumstances measure his goodness. If life is good, then God is really good. If life isn’t so good, maybe He’s not quite as good as I thought. I could be wrong, but I’m willing to bet I’m not the only one who struggles with this. We’ve bought into the lie that if everything isn’t perfect in our lives that God can’t possibly be good.(John 16:33 MSG) I’ve told you all this so that trusting me, you will be unshakable and assured, deeply at peace. In this godless world you will continue to experience difficulties. But take heart! I’ve conquered the world”.

Jesus reminds us that just because we are followers doesn’t mean we are exempt from life’s difficult times. Now just to be clear, God doesn’t cause bad things to happen, (John 10:10), ”The thief’s (satan) purpose is to steal, kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life”. God is good, even when things aren’t. Now I’m not trying to make light of your current trials, I know what it’s like to go through the trials of life. Maybe your trial has come in the form of a diagnosis, marital struggles, loss of a loved one, or a drug addicted-teen, but whatever the situation, our circumstances do not determine God’s character. God is good even when things don’t look good.

  • Psalm 107:1 “ Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his faithful love endures forever”.
  • Psalm 145:9 “The LORD is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made”.
  • Mark 10:18 “And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone.”
  • Psalm 119:68 “You are good and do good; Teach me Your statutes.”

The Bible is full of verse after verse about God’s goodness, written by people who experienced trials and tribulations just like you and me. I thought of Jesus himself, he said “no one is good but God”, knowing his father had sent him to die. I wondered to myself if I could really believe my father was good if he brought me into the world just to die. Would my kids still believe I was good if it were them? I’m sure Jesus didn’t necessarily think his pending death seemed like a  good day (Read Luke 22:41-44), but he trusted that even though it looked bad, it wouldn’t end bad. He knew God was good and he was willing to bet his life on it. I know things may not look good for you right now, but God is good and “all things work together for good of  those who love God and are called according to his purpose” (Roman 8:28). Don’t give up, don’t stop believing in God’s goodness. He is with you and He is for you.
