The Comeback

I love a good comeback story, anyone else? Some of my favorite movies end with a comeback twist. Or what about a great sports story? I remember several years back when my sister’s softball team, the East Carter Lady Redbirds, were off battling for a chance at the final four. It was the last game before the state games began and we were down by around nine runs in the seventh inning, not looking too good for the girls. In the minds of us spectators, we had already written it off as a loss. Maybe next year they’d make it to state, but it sure wasn’t happening this year. Well, to our surprise, the girls managed by some miracle to come back and win the game by one run. It was an insane inning, if I’ve ever seen one, an incredible comeback! Now, while I love movies and sports stories, my favorite comeback story of all time has to be the story of Christ’s resurrection (John 20:1-9).

Jesus was beaten and bruised until He was no longer recognizable, hung on a cross by nail-pierced hands and feet holding Him to the tree, and finally stabbed in His side to make sure He was finished. Jesus could have stepped off the cross at any time, but He was on assignment by the Father for us, for our sins. When Jesus died, He took all the sin and shame from us and it was buried with Him. I am thankful for the cross. I am grateful Jesus paid the price for my sin, BUT He didn’t stop there. Death couldn’t hold Him down. Three days dead in a tomb and He rose again. Talk about a comeback!

So, He lives, but what does His resurrection have to do with us? Well, the short answer for that is simply, everything! He lives so that we can also have life, life, and more life (John 10:10)! He defeated death forever so that we could also become overcomers. It doesn’t matter what struggle you’re facing, whether it be relational, spiritual, emotional, physical; Jesus has already defeated death, hell, and the enemy, and you will overcome!

I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

When Jesus rose again, he set you up for a comeback as well. My pastor often says, “If it ain’t good, it ain’t over!” Jesus came, died, and overcame! Because He lives, we can face anything that Satan or life in general throws our way! We’ve been equipped by Christ in us to overcome any and every obstacle, setback, or disappointment. The first part of 1 John 5:12 says, “The one who has the Son has life.” The word life here is talking about zoe life. Zoe life means possessed with vitality looking to the fullness of life. Life, life, and more life! Jesus didn’t come, die, and raise from the dead for us to merely survive, He rose so we could thrive!

Maybe today you feel like you’re standing at the plate, it’s the seventh inning and you’re down by nine. I’ve been there. I’m there often, but let me encourage you. Don’t give up now because this is your moment to push through! Your comeback is on its way! Christ has made you an overcomer!

For I know the plans I have for you,’ says the Lord. ‘They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.’ Jeremiah 29:11
